Should I Bother Becoming a VA?

If you’re looking for a part-time job, you need to know what it takes to become a virtual assistant. However, you may also be thinking: Should I even bother?

I’m here to tell you that being a virtual assistant is possible and can be fun and profitable. In fact, if you work smart and put in the effort, there’s no reason anyone shouldn’t be able to make money as a VA.

Virtual assistant jobs are perfect for moms because they allow you to take care of your personal life while still earning some extra income.

Are There Benefits to Being a VA?

There are lots of benefits of being a virtual assistant, but if you’re not sure where to start, here’s the biggest reason why virtual assistants make great career options for moms:

You’ll learn new skills every day.

If your kids are at school during the day, chances are you’ve got some free time during the afternoon or evening hours. So, if this sounds like a good opportunity for an afternoon project (or even an early evening project), consider becoming a virtual assistant.

There’s no need for special qualifications because many VA jobs require less than 10 hours per week (some only take one hour per week). The best part is that there are plenty of opportunities – so long as you’re willing to work hard!

Finding an Online Job

The first step to working online is to find a job that you want to do. It doesn’t matter if it is a niche job or not, as long as you enjoy it and can see yourself doing it. Here are some ways in which you can find your next job:

1.  Browse Freelancing Websites

Browse the internet for freelance jobs and find out if any positions interest you. You can use websites like oDesk, Freelancer, Upwork, and Craigslist. These sites will list jobs from clients looking for freelancers to complete their tasks.

You can also post your services on these sites and see if anyone responds to your ad. If someone does respond, then you have to send them an email explaining what you do and how much money they would pay for it.

Most clients on these websites will tell you whether or not they will hire you based on the details of their project, so make sure that everything sounds good before sending off the initial email!

2. Sign Up to be an Online Virtual Assistant

You will liaise between clients and their projects as an online virtual assistant.

You will be responsible for helping client’s complete tasks that they would otherwise have to do themselves, such as researching information on the internet or making phone calls to set up appointments with other people.

As long as you have good communication skills and are familiar with computer programs like Microsoft Word, this job should be easy.

The good news is that online virtual assistant jobs for moms are easy to find. There are a lot of companies that need virtual assistants and can’t afford to hire one full-time. The bad news is that competition can be fierce, especially if you are starting. I’ll show you where you can apply later.

Things to Consider When Picking Online Jobs

If you’re looking to find the best online assistant job, there are several things you should consider.

● What Kind of Work Are You Looking for?

The first thing is to decide what type of work you want. For example, do you want to work online or in an office?

You also absolutely need to know how much money you want to make and how much time it will take. This will help you determine how much responsibility and stress you can handle daily.

● Experience Level Makes a Difference

One of the most important things people forget is picking a job suited to their experience level. Some people have experience with specific jobs, and others don’t have any experience at all, so this factor needs to be considered before applying for a position.

If you have yet to gain experience in a particular job, starting with something more straightforward and basic is better. You can then move on to more difficult or complex assignments as you gain experience and confidence.

● Check If It’s a Real Company

Another thing people need to remember is to check whether the job is real. Many fake jobs trick you into thinking they’re getting paid for a job when they’re just stealing your personal information.

When looking at a job listing, ensure it’s coming from a legitimate company and not some scammer trying to steal your identity.

● Ask About the Pay

Another critical thing to ask about is the pay for the job. You want to make sure you’re getting paid what you’re worth; if not, you need to talk about it with that company.

An Introduction to ATS Systems

Whether you’re signing up to be a website content writer or an online virtual assistant, you’ll need to make your resume stand out. Usually, this would be fine with an on-site job because you’d have to impress a human recruiter. With online jobs, however, this gets more difficult.

And that’s because online job recruiters use Applicant Tracking Systems.

What Is Applicant Tracking Systems?

Applicant Tracking Systems are computerized systems that help human resources managers and recruiters with recruiting. These systems allow companies to quickly screen potential candidates, including their skills, experience, and work history.

Applicant Tracking Systems come in many different varieties. Still, they all have a critical thing in common: they help recruiters find the best possible match for their positions. Recruiters can use these systems to quickly sort through thousands of resumes and decide which ones best fit the role.

These systems also give recruiters more time to focus on things like personality fit and cultural fit, which are often overlooked when hiring new employees.

How ATS Systems Work

Every time someone submits a resume, it goes into an applicant pool, scanned by software that looks for certain keywords and phrases. These keywords represent qualities such as “hates working in retail,” “wants more responsibility,” or “likes to travel.” Suppose any of these words appear in your resume. In that case, you’ll be flagged as being unqualified for the position and won’t move forward with the application process.

In most cases, ATSs are built on top of an existing database that includes information about previous employees, such as their job titles and salary history. The ATS scans this database for resumes for open positions that match the qualifications listed in an employee’s profile. Once an applicant’s resume has been scanned, it will be compared against the available jobs to determine whether they are a good fit for that position.

Applicant tracking systems make it important for your resume to stand out from other candidates’ resumes. They can search through thousands of resumes and eliminate nearly half of them before they even get to you!

Making Your Resume Stand Out

You want to ensure your resume is noticed when applying for a job. But it can take a lot of work to know where and how to send it. If you’ve ever tried to submit your resume through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS), then you know how frustrating it can be when nothing shows up in the system.

Here are some tips for getting your resume selected in ATSs:

Make It Easy to Follow: Put yourself in the hiring manager’s shoes by making sure your resume is easy to read and follow. Use bullets, lists, and tables to help break up the text so readers can keep reading without getting lost.

Follow Up with Submissions: Keep track of all of your submissions and follow up with each one at least once every two weeks, if not sooner, if you have new information to share or if there’s been a change in the job description or specific skills required for the position.

Use Keywords: Your resume has to be relevant to the specific positions you’re applying for. ATS systems are based on keywords and phrases, so using those when writing your resume is important. Don’t try to be funny or clever with it — keep it simple and straightforward.

Talk About Your Core Strengths: Your resume should focus on your core strengths and achievements. You can use the job description as a guide for what to include, but don’t just regurgitate it word for word — instead, use it as inspiration to write about how you’ve helped others in similar situations. For example, if the job description says they’re looking for someone who’s organized, then talk about how you were able to organize a project or event despite its size and complexity.

Personalize Your Resume: Just like writing an email, every resume should have a personal touch that helps distinguish it from others. There are many ways to do this: by using a different format (e.g., a table), making changes in font size or spacing between sentences, adding images or graphics, etc.

Demonstrate Why You’re the Best Choice: When you’re applying for a job as a consultant or sales rep, make sure that you send a cover letter that demonstrates why you’re the best person for the job. For example: “I am seeking an opportunity because I possess skills that make me uniquely qualified for positions requiring expertise in XYZ.”

List Your Honors and Awards: This is important. Cover letters are a great place to list your achievements and awards, showing that you are motivated and driven. Examples include winning an award for being the top sales rep at a company or being inducted into an honor society. However, make sure that this information is relevant to the position you’re applying for!

The best way to ensure that your resume stands out is by tailoring it according to the job you’re applying for. For example, if you’re applying for a marketing position, then be sure to highlight your marketing experience and accomplishments in your resume.

If you’re applying as an online virtual assistant, focus on your content skills and education, and highlight your past experience in the field, if any.
